REQUIRED PAPER OR PROJECT FOR AU PAIRS DOING THEIR FIRST WEEKEND COURSE AT SILVER BAY

Each student will be required to do either a paper or project. You may do that prior to the weekend or within six weeks after the weekend. You must type the papers single space. You may mail or e-mail them.

Your assignment consists of two parts. Each Student is Required to Complete PART A and PART B1 OR B2. Each should be at least 2,000 words long.
PART A. Write a five-page paper telling us about yourself. Introduce us to your birth family and tell us the place you are from. What is unique about your country or area within it. Talk about the circumstances that led you to become an au pair in America. Introduce us to your host family and tell us about the area of the United States that you now call home. Write about your experiences you have had here in the States. Include in your paper some dreams, future plans, and/or hopes for the future. Tell us where you see yourself in five years. What will you be doing? Where will you be living? How will you get there?

PART B1: (Do either B1 or B2) We would like you to keep a daily journal related to any of the following: your expectations prior to coming to the United States; your experiences in the past day or week; child rearing beliefs you host family practices or you have adopted or brought with you; reaction to cultural or social aspects; aspects of your life in the USA you wish to treasure; information about places you visited and things you want to remember; how life differs here than in your home country; what you have been able to use that you learned from sessions at your au pair training school and/or Silver Bay Course. This needs to be done daily for three weeks. It should take you about a total of ten hours to think about and write down. Some au pairs prefer to do their journal on a computer (saved to a CD or otherwise backed up) and then email the journal to family and friends, as well as the college course staff.

PART B2: (Do either B1 or B2) We would like you to write a research paper about any topic related to the United States. It could be about a famous person, a historic site, a holiday, a tradition, a city, etc. The paper should be five pages long. Generally, it should take about 10 hours to research, write, and type the paper. **PLEASE NOTE: Any information taken from a website should be properly noted; however, the majority of the paper should be in your own words. Papers found to be copied and pasted from a website will not be accepted.

The two-part assignment must be completed by six weeks after completion of the weekend course.

PART A: Write a five-page paper telling us about your experience at Silver Bay. What did you expect the weekend to be like- what were your expectations? What did you find the weekend to be like? Why did you sign up for the course? What did you learn? What did you like and what did you not like? What suggestions for improvement do you have? What did you learn from the other au pairs during the weekend? Did you learn anything you can use in the future? If you did, what and how can you use it? If you had to offer a work session at Silver Bay, what would your topic be? Do you have or do you plan to have any future contacts with the au pairs you met at Silver Bay? Do you plan to visit any of them or have them visit you?

PART B1: (Do either B1 or B2) We would like you to participate in a charity or volunteer activity and research project. You can choose what you would like to do. Some suggestions are: the March-of-Dimes, Breast Cancer, Juvenile Diabetes, Heart Association, etc. In addition to volunteering, you need to write a three-page paper telling about the charitable group, the event, your role, and what you learned. This volunteer experience, research, writing and typing the paper should equal at least 10 hours.

PART B2: (Do either B1 or B2) We would like you to write a research paper about any topic related to a country you would like to visit. It can not be about your home country or the Unites States. It could be about a famous person, a historic site, a holiday, a tradition, a city, etc. The paper should be five pages long. Generally, it should take about 10 hours to research, write, and type the paper. **PLEASE NOTE: Any information taken from a website should be properly noted; however, the majority of the paper should be in your own words. SPECIAL NOTE FOR AU PAIRS ATTENDING FOR A THIRD OR FOURTH TIME

You may complete any of the B projects for first or second time, but you can not do the same project as you did from an earlier course with us.
